The two skies
Ask: Have you noticed stars moving across the night sky?
What actually causes that motion?
- Place the observer marker in Australia. Turn the globe west to east.
- Ask students to imagine looking south, along Earth’s axis towards the South Celestial Pole. The field appears to turn clockwise.
- Move the marker to Europe. Turn the globe in the same direction.
- Now look north towards the North Celestial Pole, near Polaris. The field appears to turn anticlockwise.
Key point: Earth has not reversed. The observer has turned to face the opposite end of the same axis.
